Why Copy Editing & Proofreading?

Grammatical errors, typos and incorrect punctuation can undermine your message and image.  Have you ever been reading and noticed an error?  A missing apostrophe, a comma where it doesn’t belong, no comma where one is needed, incorrect word usage (i.e. your instead of you’re)?  Your brain locks up; you lose your concentration and flow.  You have to reread the sentence once or twice to get the gist and back in the zone.

This can all be prevented by a good copy edit and/or proofread. It’s surprisingly hard to spot errors in your own writing. You’ve read it so many times and made changes and updates. Your brain jumps right over these errors.  The most meticulous writers make mistakes. Typos, word clutter and an unclear message may dissuade your intended audience from reading on.

Inconsistencies may cause readers to search back to the earlier parts of the book to resolve their questions.  Discrepancies  that interrupt a reader’s concentration takes away from the experience.  Common errors include:

  • A character’s eye color changed from blue to green.
  • A character takes off his coat in the foyer, then after going upstairs, takes his coat off again.
  • A female cat ia referred to as a “he”.
  • The wrong character’s name is used or a name is spelled in a different way.
  • Words being spelled in more than one way (i.e. blonde and blond–both are correct).

I can help remove all those barriers!  My values and promises to you include:

  • Small details are key.
  • I care about high quality.
  • Communication is key to a stress-free experience for both you and me.
  • I will ensure your work is polishedprofessional, and an enjoyable read.
